Gas Airsoft rifles are much like other types of gas Airsoft guns. They use compressed gas to shoot BB's and come in both blowback and non-blowback form. However, in the world of Airsoft, gas rifles are the most fun to shoot. This is because blowback rifles imitate the recoil effect you only find in real rifles. There is a distinct sense of realism when you have the stock of the gun pushing against your shoulder as you unleash hundreds of rounds per minute on your target.
Many gas Airsoft rifles are modeled after historical firearms from earlier world wars. They are often found in reenactment battles due to their keen ability to simulate a realistic form of combat. However, this isn't to say that these gas rifles aren't modeled after modern guns as well. You can easily find gas SCAR's, AR-15s and M4s on the market along with a large variety of other contemporary military firearms.
The most common form of gas used by these rifles is green gas, a propane heavy compound with a polysiloxane lubricant. The propane is the main component of the gas that is used to propel the BB while the lubricant is there to help maintain the upkeep of the gun. Today, many Airsoft players simply purchase a large tank of propane along with a propane adaptor. The adaptor fits over the muzzle of the propane tank and allows the tank to fill gas directly into the rifle or its magazine. This is a more economic way for gas rifle owners to enjoy their hobby since large tanks of propane are much cheaper than small individual cans made specifically for Airsoft sport. Also, a propane adaptor usually costs under twenty dollars. Some other types of gases used by rifles include CO2, red gas, and HFC-134a.
