WhatÂ’S That! Guide To Wakeboarding Grab Tricks
If you're new to wakeboarding, and even new to watching the sport, the names of the tricks are one of the most confusing areas of the sport! Much harder than actually teaching your body to perform wakeboarding tricks, at some stage you'll want to learn the names of them all, as well. Spin tricks are fairly easy to identify; they simply have a sort of code, indicating the degree of spin, frontside/backside, toeside/heelside, and whether it was off-axis. Spin tricks give you a system for remembering names; you'll end up with trick names like ‘TS FS OA 540′. Grab tricks have no such logic! From Canadian Bacon to the Melancholy, Palmer and Stalefish, the only way to remember them is to both watch them and DO them, over and again! Here is an introduction to the extensive list of wakeboarding grab tricks.
Backside v frontside
If you've read up on wakeboarding tips for identifying spin tricks, you already know the difference between frontside and backside. A frontside trick is one where the rider's chest turns (or stays) facing the boat; a backside tricks is one where the rider's back turns (or stays) facing the boat.
Wakeboarding grab trick list
There is no rhyme or reason to the naming scheme for wakeboarding tricks. No wakeboarding advice column can help you sort out a system – you just have to do the hard yards, memory wise. Some of the tricks are named after their inventor, some come for slang related to the look of the trick … and for some, nobody has a clue how they were named! Here is an (incomplete) wakeboarding trick list for grabs:
Intermediate level grabs
* Method: Heelside grab with lead hand, bringing wakeboard up to waist level
* Palmer: Front heelside grab with lead hand, add a twist
* Roast Beef: Heelside grab with rear hand, between the feet and through the legs
* Nuclear: Front heelside grab with rear hand, back leg boned out
* Nosebone : Toeside grab with rear hand between the feet. Front leg boned out and pointed back to where the rider came from
* Stiffy: Board comes out flat in front (laid out like a stiff!). Often done with a Roast Beef or an Indy
* Tailbone: Rear hand grabs the board's tail
* Tai Pan: Toeside grab with lead hand, through the legs and between the feet
Advanced level grab tricks
* Canadian Bacon: Toeside grab with rear hand, through legs and between feet
* Crail: Front toeside grab with rear hand, boning out back leg
* Slob: Front toeside grab with lead hand, boning out back leg; including a 180 spin in the air.
* Melancholy: Heelside grab with lead hand, between feet and boning out front leg
How to learn wakeboarding tricks
The best wakeboarding advice you'll hear regarding grab tricks is to let the wakeboard come to you – never reach for it, because you will end up on either your face or butt.
Other general wakeboarding advice also applies to grab tricks – start with the simple stuff, and master all different grab positions and the technique for boning one leg out. Once you have the basics down, you'll see that all tricks are just combinations of the simple techniques – they'll come much easier.
