Years ago as a youth, I would go with my dad to the local grocery store for one of those wonderful rectangular wax shaped packages in the check out line. It contained a single piece of gum. Small and rectangular much like the packaging it came in and had a delicious smell to it. Often the gum was stale and not very tasty but what was inside the packaging behind it is what I really wanted... baseball cards.
Like most youth my age I had a fascination with baseball. Learning its rules, the players names, who managed them. I began to recognize team colors and logos and what cities they played in. It was like a world unto itself, much like the writings of a J.K Rowling or J.R.R. Tolkien with vibrant characters and settings that you just couldn't help being absorbed into.
Then the strikes came from the early 80's into the 90's with the most damaging one being in 1994. My love for the game died that year as well as my youthful perception of what I thought was a game but really turned out to be a poorly run business by MLB and its players.
Shortly after that strike came the home run race between Big Mac and Sosa with each player going for the single season home run record. Some of my interest came back for a short time but soon faded again at allegations about players using creams and other performance enhancing supplements between these two sluggers and ultimately many in baseball.
My other favorite sport in my youth was basketball. A game that always seemed simple to me and didn't require much thought. The ball must be dribbled, put into the basket and this goes on back and forth for several quarters or halves depending on if you were watching a pro or collegiate game.
A young basketball phenom came onto the scene in the early 80's that would forever spark and embrace a new generation of players and fans. Michael Jordan... Growing up and watching the man simply known by many as "Air" gave me a new passion and love for a sport that I had never had before. Not because of the sport, or the players, or the coaches or the logos of the teams but because this man had a determination and will to compete every night with his peers and to challenge himself to be better regardless of who he was competing against. 6 Championships later, I was glad I tuned in.
This became the New National Past Time... Basketball.
