When the Maratha power was broken by the English they came to central India. They also set up the Military cantonment at Mhow often referred to as Military Head quarter of War. The purpose to control and keep an eye on the Holkers the rulers of Indore.
Generous as ever the English realized the need for modern education for the Princes of Central India and formulated plans of setting up a premier educational school at Indore. The man who galvanized this was General Henry Daly an officer of the Imperial English army in India. Henry Daly as per some reports was born at Kirkee in India and took part in the action against the mutineers in 1857 He was awarded the Indian Mutiny medal for this. He came down later to central India and took up the appointment of an Agent of the Governor General In Central India.
General Daly loved education and history. Accordingly he conceived of a school and approached the various kings and Rajas of central India. He initially set up the residency college at Indore and closely monitored its progress. Henry Daly left India in 1881 and finally breathed his last in 1895. After his demise the Chiefs of the Indian princely states of the region renamed the school as Daly College in memory of the man who had been the driving force to set up the school.
Over the last 129 years the college has earned a niche for itself and has a hallowed presence in the field of education. Generous donations of land and money from the Princes of central India were a big factor in the development of the college. Lord Hardinge the Viceroy of India inaugurated the main building as we see it today in 1912. For the next 28 years the College became an exclusive school to the sons of the Princes and Chiefs of Central India. However in 1940 the Board of Governors decided to change this archaic rule and opened it to commoners as well to keep pace with the new developments all around.
The school became co educational in 1997 and is now one of the premier public schools in India. A string of important educationists and service officers like Air Cmdre Venugopal and Colonel Kak have been at the helm of affairs of this school. When you drive around the campus spread over 200 acres one is reminded of the missionary zeal of General Henry Daly. He will be remembered for ever.
